"Mom, can I please stay with Jenna tonight?" Lauryn asked. Mom hesitated, looking at Jenna, unconscious from her raging fever. She, then glanced at Dad with her I-don't-care-do-you? look.
He looked at her for a second and smiled. It was the first time he'd smiled since Jenna got sick. "Just this one time," he said. “I’ll get the doctor to check in on you two every once in a while. You can borrow my cell phone, so you can call us at home if you have a problem.” “Thank you, Dad!” She hugged him and then raced back over to her sister. They soon left and Lauryn watched Jenna, talking to her as if she were conscious. Finally, she yawned. "Night," she whispered to Jenna, and fell asleep on the couch. She woke up a few hours later to blackness. The clock clicked eerily, seeming to echo through the room. Something was wrong. She straind to see Jenna. Finally, she got up and groped her way to the light and switched it on. The bed was empty. Lauryn raced into the bathroom. She wasn't there. Panicking, she flung open the door and ran into the hall, looking both ways, hoping to spot her sister. No sign of her. Just a few lightbulbs illuminating the white walls. She ran right and the hall branched again. She checked several halls, but found no one. She finally sank down against the wall, pulled out the cell phone with trembling hands, and dialed her home number. It took a while for Dad to pick up and she had to call more than once. "Hello?" His voice was groggy. "Dad?" Her voice trembled. "Lauryn? What happened? What's wrong?" "Sh-she's gone." She was sobbing by now. "Gone?" "I-I just woke up and she was gone." "Hold in there, honey. I'll be over there in a few minutes."
