Rose
"Rose, run!" I woke up with a jolt to my brother, Jonathon's yell. It took me a few seconds to fully comprehend what he'd told me to do. But just as I sat up, my bedroom door opened. A huge figure stepped in. I was paralyzed with fear. I got that sometimes when I was really scared. Where I couldn't move at all. He spanned the room in three long steps and grabbed a handful of my hair and yanked me to my feet. My heart went from beating a mile a minute to nearly stopping when he pressed a dagger against my throat, switching his other hand from my hair to my wrist. "Don't scream," he whispered, hoarsly in my ear. "Or else." He put some pressure on the knife. He pushed me through the room and out the door, into the hallway. There was another man out there, with Jonathon. His hand was over Jonathon's mouth and his other arm was holding him around the waist. I could tell that Jonathon had been struggling. They pushed us down the hall and into the kitchen where the trapdoor to the attic was open and a chair was placed right under it. The ceiling was super low, so the men had no trouble pushing us up into the attic. What they wanted to do with us up there, I didn't know and I really didn't want to know. As soon as I entered the attic, tingles spread down my spine and to my arms and legs. The man holding me captive, took the dagger off my neck and reached into his pocket and grabbed out a pendant necklace sort of thing and pointed it at the opposite wall. A bright light appeared, making all the darkness flee. Jonathon glanced at me. I got his message. Escape was now or never. I realized that I'd probably been used to keep Jonathon in line. He probably could've gotten away at any time. I twisted my wrist to force the man to let go of it. When I turned around, Jonathon was already free and he grabbed the dagger from the man and pulled me into the light. Instead of going to the other side of the attic, like I'd expected, we tumbled out onto pine needles with a loud crunch. The portal closed quickly. 'Please stay closed.' I thought. It stayed closed, at least temporarily. I started crying. I had never been that scared in my entire life. Jonathon pulled me close and kissed the top of my head. He was breathing heavily and I could feel his heart racing. "It's okay, Rose," he whispered. "We're okay."
