Lauryn
Me and Natasha shopped for a long time. Natasha's got straight, shoulder-length, redish-brown hair and she loves cracking really bad jokes that are so bad and not funny, that they're funny. So, we laughed and shopped for hours and temporarily I forgot my problem. When we finally left it was dark outside. "Wow, it's already eight. I'm going to call my parents so they don't get worried." She dialed their number and told them that we'd be there in a half hour. As soon as she hung up and put her cell phone away, she said, "So, how did it go with the principal?" I winced slightly, but I answered. "He lectured me. As always. And called my dad." "What did your dad say?" "What he always tells me. To keep trying. And he figured out what started it all. I thought he already knew, but apparently not." "What did start it?" "I was stupid." "And..." "I was trying to do something to get my mind off Jenna." I mumbled the last word, that name bringing back way too many good memories turned painful. Natasha didn't say anything. She just nodded. I was glad she didn't try to say anything to comfort me. People always did that, especially Dad, but they were empty words. They never helped anything. I was busy trying to think of something other than Jenna, so I didn't notice for a few seconds that Natasha wasn't walking beside me. I turned around, wondering if she had fallen behind. My heart skipped a beat. There were two men behind me, both dressed in black. One had a hand over Natasha's mouth and an arm around her waist. She was kicking and basically throwing a fit, but he seemed unfazed by it. The other one was the one that scared me most, because he was the one that was closest, with a daggar, and he had been about to grab me from behind. My heart began to pound, like it was trying to build something in my chest. I backed up. I realized, to late that I was backing into a dead end alley. I had no choice but to go further. I didn't know what I'd do at the end. Too soon, my back hit the wall and I glanced both ways frantically, wondering if there was any escape that I'd managed to miss before. My heart was going so fast, it could have entered in a car race and won. What kind of crazy lunatic stalked the streets at night with a dagger? "What are the names of your parents?" He asked. The question caught me off guard. What kind of question was that? Looking at the dagger though, I thought I probaby should just answer. "Jeff and Maddlyn Nicholas." "Your biological parents," he said, like it was totally obvious. How did he know that those were my adopted parent's names anyway? "M-melissa and Vernon Jacobson." I couldn't see his face, but somehow I knew that he recognized those names. He put his dagger in a sheath at his waist and took another step toward me. All of a sudden a woman appeared in front of me. Not like she stepped between us or anything, but she literally materialized out of thin air. I wasn't sure which freaked me out more. The guy with the dagger or whatever she just did. This was a dream. This had got to be a dream. She made a motion like she was throwing a ball or something, but nothing was in her hand. As soon as the piece of nothing left her hand though, the man's hand snapped back and he dropped the dagger. She snapped her finger and lightning flashed down from the sky and hit his foot. He dropped to the ground, writhing. She swung around and looked at me. She looked at the wall behind me and nodded. I was still in shock, staring at her, wondering what on earth she'd just done. When she turned back to me her expression was guarded. "Lauryn," she said my name like I always said Jenna's. Like it brought back too many painful memories. How did she know my name? "Take this and go through the portal. You should be safe from Veild, there, at least temporarily." She handed me a necklace. It was perfectly circular, about the size of a silver dollar with a red gem imbedded in gold in the center. I could feel little etchings around the edge, but I couldn't see them in the darkness. "What's this?" I asked. "Point it at the wall." "Excuse me?" "Point it at the wall." I didn't understand, but I did what she said. A bright light flashed and I jumped and backed away a few steps. "What the...?" A door of white light stood before me, shimmering. The woman turned back to me. "Go into it." "What? There's a wall there behind that... thing. I am not..." She looked behind me. "Lauryn, look behind you." I swung around and saw both of the men coming down the alley. The guy with a hurt foot limped, but was still walking toward us. I glanced at the door that was beginning to shrink. As my back was turned, the woman grabbed my shoulders and pushed me into it. I was fully expecting to face plant in the stone wall. What I didn't expect was to tumble out onto a forest floor. I laid on my back looking up at the sky. The trees were kind of like a hybrid palm/pine tree. The needles were like arrows that were in a palm leaf formation on the branches. They reached halfway to the ground. The door was getting smaller and smaller, until it shrank to the size of a fingertip and vanished into sparks.
