Lauryn
I smacked the locker door as hard as I could and it hit something and bounced back and hit my shoulder. Irritated, I shoved the annoying book back into the locker and forced the locker shut. The latch clicked, echoing down the empty hallway. The school seemed dark, with only a few lightbulbs lighting the way. The shadows glared down at me, gossiping with each other. Were they whispering about what I'd done? Why shouldn't they be? Everybody at school knew about it. Why shouldn't the shadows know too? Now I knew I was going crazy. Imagining the shadows talking to each other. What was I going to tell Dad? The principal had probably called him by now. It was only a few minutes before Dad called me to get my side of the story. Dad never talked to me harshly about this...problem, I guess you would call it. He would just have long talks with me, telling me to keep trying. 'I believe you can do it,' he'd say. 'You need to keep trying.' Then he'd hug me and kiss my forehead and our talk would be over. He always saw me as his little girl, never as his adopted daughter with a lot of problems. Sure enough, my cell phone started vibrating as I pushed out the doors. I hesitated and finally picked it up. "Hello?" I said it like nothing was wrong, which was really hard at the moment. "Lauryn," Dad's voice replied, "The principal just called me." I sighed. "I'm sorry, Dad. I really am trying. It's just not working." "I know you are." He talked to me for a while and then abruptly asked the question, "I've been wanting to ask you, do you even know what started this?" I was quiet for a second. "This is about Jenna, isn't it?" he said. I didn't answer. "Isn't it?" He repeated. "Yeah, that's what started it." I finally answered. "I guess I needed to get my mind off her." "Honey, why have you never told me this before?" "It's always been to painful to talk about." I cursed myself for the crack that was edging it's way into my voice. It's just when he said her name I immediately saw her wild, dark hair, her sparkling eyes, her impish little grin, everything that I'd never see again. He was quiet for a few seconds. "You're not coming home tonight, are you?" He finally said. "No. I'm going to a sleepover at Natasha's house." "Okay. Let's continue this conversation tomorrow when you get back, okay?" "'Kay." "Keep trying, Lauryn. You can do it." "I'll try." I whispered, hanging up.
